A 21‑Foot Steel Beam Arrives at West Point to Link 9/11 First Responders with Future Military Leaders

On Tuesday a 21‑foot, 16,900‑pound steel beam that was recovered from the South Tower of the World Trade Center was delivered to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The beam was part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Steel Across America tour, which travels across the country to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. West Point was the tour’s 33rd stop.

West Point trains generations of Army officers, many of whom served in the wars that followed 9/11, so the arrival of the beam created a direct link between the first‑responder heroism of that day and the service of later military graduates.

Superintendent Lt. Gen. James B. Bartholomees III explained that the steel “connects the courage of first responders on 9/11 with the Americans who answered the call to serve in the years that followed, including generations of West Point graduates.” Frank Siller, chairman and CEO of Tunnel to Towers and brother of fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, spoke about his brother’s actions on 9/11 and said the beam symbolizes the shared values of duty, honor and country.

The ceremony gathered cadets, faculty, staff and first‑responders. It began with a color guard and a pipe‑and‑drum procession, included a blessing of the steel, the national anthem, and a moment of reflection accompanied by “Amazing Grace.”
