0:00- Hey, hot stuff.
0:01You've got to check out these
0:03new impossibly high res images of the sun.
0:06They're totally mesmerizing,
0:09but they also reveal new secrets
0:10about the sun's surface.
0:12They were taken by the world's most
0:13powerful solar telescope in Hawaii.
0:16Now, even though the sun is about
0:17150 million kilometers away,
0:19this telescope can make out details as small
0:22as 18 kilometers wide on its surface.
0:25That's like building a telescope in Philadelphia
0:27that can see a quarter in New York City.
0:30The fine details in these new images are full of
0:32what look like tiny whirlpools.
0:35These swirling patterns are an example
0:37of a phenomenon called Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability.
0:40It happens when one layer
0:42of a fluid moves faster than the layer next to it,
0:44and it forms a small wave
0:46or a rip curl over the crest.
0:48Now in this case, it's two layers
0:49of the hot electrically charged gas
0:52that makes up the sun's surface sliding against each other.
0:55And we see the same thing in ocean currents
0:57and in clouds sometimes.
0:59Even in the atmosphere
1:00of big planets like Jupiter and Saturn.
1:03But confirming these on the sun's surface
1:05has scientists al hot and bothered,
1:08because this could help answer the burning question of
1:11how stars like the sun have atmospheres hotter
1:14than a million degrees,
1:16even though their surface is only a few thousand degrees.
1:18It could even help us figure out magnetic flares
1:21and eruptions.
1:22The constant turning of this gas could be
1:25what starts the twisting
1:26and braiding strands of magnetic energy around the sun.
1:30You know, they say you should never look at the sun,
1:33but I'm glad someone is.
