Singapore and Latin America Strengthen Trade Ties
This is Singapore's 29th trade deal and its first with the MERCOSUR group, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The group has a large economy and population.
The agreement is already in place for Singapore with Paraguay and Uruguay.
This is a big step for Singapore's economic ties with Latin America, especially as Singapore and Brazil will soon mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.
Brazil is the largest economy in MERCOSUR and a key trade partner for Singapore. Singapore is also a major trade partner for Brazil in Southeast Asia.
The agreement aims to increase economic cooperation between Singapore and the four South American countries by reducing trade barriers and improving investment conditions.
Under the agreement, MERCOSUR countries will remove import taxes on most products over time.
This deal could create new opportunities for Singapore businesses in Latin America, especially in manufacturing and digital solutions.
Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said the agreement will help Singapore businesses access new markets and create jobs.
The deal could also help Singapore get food from more sources. Brazil and other Latin American countries export a lot of food, and Singapore wants to import more.
Many Singapore companies already operate in MERCOSUR markets, and trade between Singapore and the bloc is significant.
A tech executive said the agreement will help more businesses, especially small ones, reach new customers and grow.
A company CEO said the agreement will make it easier for them to invest in Brazil, a key market for them.
