Man Charged with Kidnapping and Having a Parang

Mashahri Mazlan, 38, was given two charges: one for kidnapping and one for having a scheduled weapon.
The police were told about a man being threatened by a group at a car park on Canberra Street at about 1:55 am on Tuesday. They were alerted to this case.
The man was confronted by two men and two women because of a disagreement about renting a car.
Mashahri is said to have shown a parang and threatened the man, telling him to sit in the front passenger seat of a vehicle.
Mashahri then drove from one place to another, according to the charges against him.
The police found the vehicle and when they did, Mashahri drove off with the victim and another person in the car. The police followed them.
The chase ended when Mashahri crashed the car into a lamppost in Woodlands.
After the crash, the other person in the car ran away on foot.
Mashahri was arrested at the scene with a parang on him.
The other three people who were said to have helped Mashahri were arrested later.
Mashahri is being held for more investigation and will go back to court next week.
If Mashahri is found guilty of kidnapping, he could be jailed for up to seven years, fined, or caned.
If Mashahri is found guilty of having a scheduled weapon, he can be jailed for up to five years and must be caned at least six times.
If Mashahri has done this before, he can be jailed for between two and eight years and must be caned at least six times.
