Cathy Engelbert’s Retirement Marks a Turning Point After Transforming the WNBA’s Finances
During her tenure she negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement that introduced the league’s first million‑dollar player contracts, secured a long‑term media‑rights partnership, and oversaw the expansion of the league to 18 teams.
Those moves helped the WNBA’s franchise values jump from roughly $10 million in 2019 to about $460 million in 2026, while television ratings and game attendance reached record levels.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league’s 30‑year history,” praising her leadership and commitment to women’s basketball.
Engelbert said the league is now in a strong financial position and that handing over the reins at this moment will allow the next leader to build on a solid foundation, but the transition will be closely watched as the league aims to sustain its rapid growth.
