Europe’s First Private Rocket Reaches Orbit – A Boost for Security and Economic Independence

German firm Isar Aerospace successfully lifted its two‑stage, 28‑metre Spectrum rocket from the Andoya spaceport in Norway, a site located north of the Arctic Circle.

The flight is the first time a privately developed rocket has reached orbit from continental Europe, a milestone the company announced on X, calling it ‘European history.’

The Spectrum is designed to carry roughly one tonne of payload to low‑Earth orbit, and Isar plans to build more than 30 rockets each year once its production line is fully operational.

European officials see the achievement as a move toward launch autonomy, meaning the continent can rely less on the United States or other foreign providers. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the success strengthens both security and the European economy, a view echoed by the Ministry for Research, Technology and Space. Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth added that the new launch capability also boosts European security.

Isar has already secured about €200 million from the European Space Agency to develop new rockets and expand its infrastructure, and the company is also preparing a second launch site in Canada.
