Howard Buffett to Chair Berkshire Hathaway: What It Means for the Company’s Culture

Berkshire Hathaway announced on Friday that Howard Buffett will become chairman of the $1.1 trillion conglomerate, while his father, Warren Buffett, will move to the role of chairman emeritus.

The change follows a long‑standing succession plan. Howard has served as a Berkshire director for 33 years, giving him more board experience than Warren had before becoming CEO.

In 2011, Warren told CBS News that he would like Howard to succeed him, indicating that the plan has been discussed for more than a decade.

Howard’s new position is non‑executive. He will not manage day‑to‑day operations but will focus on preserving Berkshire’s culture, which he described in the Wall Street Journal as “keeping things simple, doing only what’s needed, treating people fairly, respecting managers and shareholders, and being honest about bad news.”

The appointment arrives nine months after Warren handed the CEO responsibilities to longtime lieutenant Greg Abel, completing the latest step in the leadership transition.

This move shows Berkshire’s intention to keep its core values at the centre of future decisions as the company moves forward.

Howard’s background includes work as a farmer, photographer, conservationist and businessman, and he leads a charitable foundation, but his primary task at Berkshire will be cultural stewardship.
