Petting Zoos: How Simple Hand‑Washing Can Protect Children from Dangerous Bacteria

A three‑year‑old girl died from haemolytic uraemic syndrome after visiting a petting zoo in Victoria.

The girl was confirmed to have had haemolytic uraemic syndrome, a rare but serious condition caused by infection with Shiga‑toxin‑producing Escherichia coli bacteria.

These bacteria can be transferred from animal fur, wool, manure, bedding, soil and enclosure surfaces to a person’s hands, and then to the mouth.

Toddlers are especially at risk because they frequently put their fingers, toys, food and dummies into their mouths, making thorough hand‑washing essential.

The Australian Veterinary Association recommends that petting zoos provide hand‑washing stations with running water, soap and disposable towels, and advises parents to ensure children wash their hands for at least 20 seconds before eating or touching their faces.

Parents can help by supervising their children, using the hand‑washing facilities before and after animal contact, and reminding kids not to touch their faces or put unwashed hands near food.
