Why Replacing Bar Exams with Skills‑Based Courses Matters for Future Lawyers

British Columbia has become the sixth Canadian province to drop the traditional bar exam. Instead, it will use a four‑phase, skills‑based program that tests legal knowledge, advocacy, ethics, practice management and other abilities, joining Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Nunavut.

The Law Society of British Columbia announced the shift last October, saying that bar training must be updated to match evolving student needs and the practical skills required in modern law practice.

The new program replaces the full‑time, 10‑week bar course. It offers a full‑time track – the first cohort starts this month – and a part‑time track that is planned to begin in May.

Ontario’s Law Society finished its consultations in January and, as of last month, has not made a decision or set a timeline for a similar skills‑based switch.

Law students and professionals such as Sydney Dahrouge and Richard Jiang argue that the skills‑based approach better fits today’s legal work. Dahrouge, who studied law in Alberta and completed her bar training and articling in BC, says the new system focuses on judgment, drafting and ethics rather than fast index navigation. Jiang, who articled with Dahrouge and graduated from UBC’s Peter A. Allard School of Law, adds that artificial‑intelligence tools can retrieve cases instantly, so junior lawyers need to concentrate on analysis and communication.

The shift matters because it aligns legal education with the realities of modern practice, encourages national consistency, and prepares future lawyers to use AI responsibly while honing the core skills that clients and courts value.
