Wade was diagnosed in late 2024 after having neurological symptoms, and it was confirmed as probable in 2025.

This disease can only be confirmed after death.

Wade said getting the diagnosis was difficult, but he wants to share his story to raise awareness about head injuries and brain health in soccer.

Wade said, 'Soccer gave me a lot. It gave me a life, a career, and the chance to play for Australia.'

Symptoms of this disease include depression, memory loss, and poor impulse control.

Advancement of the game

Wade led the Australian team in a 1993 match against Argentina.

Wade said more needs to be done to understand the long-term effects of head injuries to protect future players.

Wade said, 'If sharing my story can help someone or make the game take brain health more seriously, it is worth it.'

Wade's announcement comes after 33 Australian football players were diagnosed with CTE.

The head of the players' union said Wade's decision to talk about his diagnosis is an important step.

He said Wade is doing this for himself and for other players who may face similar issues.

The union head said Australian football needs to do more to prevent brain injuries.

A decorated career

Wade was the captain of the Australian team for six years.

Wade was born in England and moved to Australia when he was 11. He played for several teams and made his first international appearance in 1986.

Wade played for Australia from 1990 to 1996.

Wade played 345 national league games and 119 matches for Australia.

Wade also played in the 1988 Olympics and two World Cup qualifying campaigns.

After retiring, Wade worked in TV commentary and coached kids.
