Awer Mabil: From Refugee Camp to Football Star, Using Sport to Champion Multiculturalism

Awer Mabil’s story begins in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in north‑western Kenya, where he was born before his family fled to Australia at the age of ten, seeking safety and a fresh start.

After settling in Australia, Mabil rose through the ranks of football, eventually representing the Socceroos at two World Cups and earning the title of Young Australian of the Year in 2023, a testament to his on‑field talent and off‑field influence.

During a post‑World Cup press conference, Mabil bluntly called Pauline Hanson’s call for a “monoculture” in Australia “bulls***”, insisting that the nation should celebrate its multicultural fabric because that diversity makes Australia great.

Earlier this year he signed a three‑year contract with Melbourne City, saying he is eager to put down roots at home – “I can finally buy furniture that I can keep,” he laughed, signalling a long‑term commitment to the Australian community.

Beyond football, Mabil co‑founded the charity Barefoot to Boots, which supplies football boots and other essential aid to refugees living in camps worldwide, turning his own childhood experience into a platform for global solidarity.
