What Kalie McCrystal’s Matterhorn disappearance teaches about elite mountain‑running risks

On September 1, 38‑year‑old Kalie McCrystal, a lawyer from Squamish, British Columbia, was last seen above the Matterhorn’s Jean‑Antoine Carrel hut, around 3,830 metres. She was attempting a solo climb and descent of the Lion Ridge, hoping to set a new fastest known time.

McCrystal is a well‑known skyrunner. She holds the female record for Squamish’s Tantalus Traverse (9 hours 40 minutes) and completed a solo ascent and descent of the Hörnli Ridge from Zermatt in 6 hours 47 minutes 33 seconds. Earlier this year she finished fourth in the women’s division of Italy’s Trofeo Kima race, a 52‑kilometre technical mountain event.

The search teams launched a full‑day helicopter operation, but after finding no trace they suspended aerial searches. The decision highlights how quickly conditions at high altitude can become unsafe, and how even experienced athletes can disappear without a signal.

Duncan O’Regan, a fellow mountain runner and friend, called McCrystal “a fixture in the local mountain‑running community” and said the community is “crossing our fingers” for her safe return. His comments reflect the close‑knit support network that often backs elite skyrunners.
