How the World Athletics Ultimate Championship is Structured and Why It Stands Apart

The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship opens in Budapest, gathering the sport’s top athletes for a made‑for‑TV meet in a year that does not feature an outdoor world championship.

World Athletics created the Ultimate Championship to keep the sport’s momentum after the Olympics, filling the gap until the next outdoor world championship scheduled for 2027 in Tokyo.

World Athletics is offering a $10 million prize pool, with $150,000 for each individual winner.

The prize money is far higher than the recent Diamond League Final or the bonuses given to Olympic and world‑championship medalists, aiming to attract the very best competitors.

The program includes 26 individual events – 13 for men and 13 for women – plus two mixed relays (4 × 100 m and 4 × 400 m). Several traditional Olympic and world‑championship events were omitted so the whole meet fits into three three‑hour TV sessions.

All reigning Olympic, world and Diamond League champions received automatic invitations. Most other spots were earned through a season‑long qualifying system, although World Athletics granted exemptions to a few star athletes and to competitors from the host nation, Hungary.

On the track, the 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 100 m/110 m hurdles and 400 m hurdles start with two eight‑person semifinals; the top four in each heat advance to the final. The 1 500 m, 5 000 m, both mixed relays and all field events go straight to a final, reducing the number of rounds.

Compared with the Olympics or world championships, the Ultimate Championship features fewer athletes per event, fewer rounds, and a condensed three‑day schedule, making it more TV‑friendly and offering larger individual payouts.
