People in Europe Watch Solar Eclipse

People in Europe saw the moon cover the sun. This was the first time in 27 years that people in mainland Europe could see a total solar eclipse.

The sun was fully covered by the moon in Iceland at 1:49 p.m. The shadow moved to Spain, where people could see the sun's corona at 2:30 p.m.

People outside of Europe may have seen a partial solar eclipse. This is when the moon makes a crescent shape on the sun.

The shadow was visible in 26 states and Washington, D.C. People who missed it could watch NASA's live broadcast.

Today's sky is special because of the moon's path. There was also a perfect alignment of six planets and a new moon phase.

People need special glasses to look at a solar eclipse. They can get these glasses from libraries or buy them online.

It seems like there are many solar eclipses, but they are actually rare.
