0:00The hashtag guttalk has over 6 billion
0:03views on Tik Tok. [music]
0:05>> Gut health.
0:05>> Gut health.
0:06>> Gut health.
0:06>> Gut health.
0:07>> Gut health.
0:08>> And if you think that's a big number,
0:10how about $60 billion? [music] According
0:13to Grand View Research, that's the
0:15market value of the global digestive
0:17health [music] products market. And it's
0:19projected to grow to over hundred
0:21billion dollars by 2033. These massive
0:25numbers are just a taste of how popular
0:28the world of gut health [music] has
0:29become.
0:30>> Gut health has been such a hot topic all
0:32over social media for a couple of years
0:33now. More people talking about gut
0:35health [music] and the gut microbiome.
0:37>> Gut health is everywhere right now and
0:40honestly it should be.
0:42>> Experts say [music] good gut health can
0:43not just improve digestion but also
0:45prolong life, boost immunity and reduce
0:48inflammation. But with so much
0:50information out there, including some
0:52extreme diets and bizarre trends like
0:55poop maxing and coffee enemas, it can be
0:58confusing to [music] tell what advice is
1:00backed by real evidence instead of
1:02marketing gimmicks and social media
1:03clickbait. [music] I tracked down some
1:05experts to help explain what gut health
1:07really means, [music] how it became such
1:09a hot topic, and what they could tell us
1:12about maintaining a glorious gut.
1:16First off, let's define what gut health
1:19is. And just to get this out of the way,
1:22it involves pooping.
1:23>> Gut health is not just the absence
1:26[music] of disease, but a state where
1:29your entire gastrointestinal tract,
1:31which is your stomach, [music] your
1:33small bowel, your large bowel, all of
1:35these organs are [music]
1:37thriving and healthy such that you're
1:39preventing disease occurrence in [music]
1:41future. a lot of focus on the gut
1:44microbiome. Um, and that's really having
1:46a robust gut microbiome, which is having
1:48a lot of different helpful microbes in
1:50there and feeding them well.
1:52>> The microbiome in our gut is vital to
1:54our health. It's a complex network of
1:57trillions of microorganisms or microbes
2:00living inside of our digestive system.
2:02That's trillions with a T. When we talk
2:05about the gut microbiome, we're talking
2:07about archa fungi, bacteria that live
2:11within our gut. They are synergistic
2:13with us. They help us [music] survive as
2:14a species, as an individual. And if
2:17they're happy, we're happy. We evolved
2:19with these microbes in our gut [music]
2:21since really since the beginning of
2:23time. So, they're very important for
2:25helping us digest what we eat, [music]
2:27extract calories from what we eat, and
2:29help maintain a normal gut sort of
2:31ecosystem. [music]
2:32They eat mostly what we eat. Um, and
2:35their waste products have a huge role in
2:37determining a lot of aspects of our
2:39health.
2:39>> Those compounds get absorbed into your
2:41bloodstream and they can move to your
2:42heart. [music] They can move to your
2:43lungs. They can move to your brain and
2:45they can have beneficial effects
2:47elsewhere so far away from where those
2:49bacteria [music] are.
2:50>> This is also where we get another
2:52buzzword that you might have heard
2:53before, probiotic. Probiotics are live
2:57microorganisms which when administered
2:59in adequate [music] amounts confer a
3:01health benefit on the host. If you want
3:03to go more in depth on that, we actually
3:05did a video about probiotics in yogurt.
3:08And there's actually no hardline
3:10definition of what exactly is going on
3:12inside of us that makes our gut
3:14microbiome healthy. What we do know is
3:17that if the microbes in it are diverse
3:19and robust, our gut is working properly.
3:21>> [music]
3:21>> We always describe each person's gut
3:23microbiome as being like a fingerprint.
3:25>> Tons of different species doing tons of
3:27different things, producing all these
3:29different compounds.
3:30>> And when that world of microbes inside
3:32of us is out of balance, we can feel it.
3:35>> When it comes to your gut microbiome,
3:37there's no good or bad bacteria. You
3:39need a lot of different kinds of [music]
3:41bacteria in your gut.
3:42>> So, there's a term for the imbalance of
3:44the gut microbiome called dispiosis.
3:48And some of those symptoms are things
3:50like bloating, abdominal pain, issues
3:52with bowel movements.
3:53>> So, it's a good thing that we're talking
3:56about our gut health and microbiome
3:58more, but its rise as a trending topic
4:00has opened the door to questionable
4:02claims about gut health. Many people
4:05have conditions that are affected by the
4:07gut microbiome.
4:08>> 40% of Americans [music] say that GI
4:11symptoms disrupt their daily lives. Gut
4:13issues have been stigmatized in the
4:15past. You know, you don't [music] walk
4:17around talking about your bowels and how
4:20they it's just kind of not what people
4:22do.
4:22>> Public awareness of the gut health
4:24benefits from things like probiotics
4:26became widespread in the [music] 2010s
4:29and product marketing for supplements,
4:31beverages, beauty, and food products
4:33leaned into that popularity. They added
4:35labels with claims like supports gut
4:37health and boosts microbiome. You don't
4:40know if that means that actually any of
4:43those bacteria [music]
4:44are going to make it to your colon and
4:45they're going to take hold or if they
4:47were ever, you know, alive to begin
4:48with. Everyone should just remember that
4:50the [music] supplement industry is not
4:52regulated the same way as a medicine.
4:54>> That hasn't stopped the big business of
4:56the wellness industry, which is now
4:58worth over $6 trillion globally and is
5:02largely unregulated.
5:03>> You go [music] to any grocery store and
5:05you see 100 different probiotics and gut
5:07health supplements. There have been
5:09studies that have been done that have
5:10shown that if you take probiotics off
5:12the shelf and you look at them, almost
5:1430% of them are completely dead. They
5:16have nothing that's alive. And I think
5:18even more worrisome is that almost 30%
5:20of them have something in them that
5:22isn't on the label. So, you don't really
5:25know what you're getting.
5:26>> But things really took off once social
5:29media influencers [music] started
5:31heavily chiming in about gut health.
5:34>> All right, I got a gut hack for you.
5:35>> You want to focus on your gut health?
5:37this is the perfect drink for you.
5:38>> I cleansed my gut and now I have a
5:41healthy gut.
5:42>> While some wellness influencers might be
5:43legit doctors or health care
5:45professionals, research shows that many
5:48of them aren't.
5:49>> Billions of bacteria live in a person's
5:51mouth, maybe more than there are birds
5:53on Earth. Some are helpful, others, many
5:56are behind oral health problems like
5:57cavities and gingivitis. So, how do you
5:59manage something you can't actually see?
6:01It starts with a solid routine and the
6:04right ingredients for the job. Take
6:05staff fluoride for example. It helps
6:07target and kill plaque bacteria. Plaque
6:10can harden into tartar and plaque
6:12bacteria can cause cavities and
6:14gingivitis. That's why Colgate Total
6:16developed a unique stabilization [music]
6:18technology to keep the bacteria fighting
6:20Stannis fluoride stable in your
6:21toothpaste for longer. The benefits go
6:24even further when [music] you pair it
6:25with the Colgate total toothbrush and
6:27mouthwash. The toothbrush is designed
6:29with ultra fine bristles to [music]
6:31reach deep along the gum line and
6:32between teeth where plaque likes to
6:34hide. And when you're not brushing, the
6:36antibacterial [music] mouthwash extends
6:37protection. Together, they form the
6:40Colgate Total Active Prevention System,
6:42designed to prevent oral health
6:43problems.
6:45Before they start,
6:49>> 41% of health and wellness influencers
6:52identify themselves as some kind of
6:54health care professional, but most of
6:56them describe themselves as things like
6:58coaches or entrepreneurs. And the thing
7:01is, people are listening to their
7:03advice. Pew research shows that 40% of
7:07adults get health and wellness
7:08information from social media
7:10influencers or from podcasts.
7:12>> It's midnight and you're scrolling
7:14TikTok and you see somebody [music] who
7:15is like, "Hey, do you have diarrhea and
7:18bloating?" Suddenly, you're locked in.
7:20For the first time, you're feeling
7:21heard. [music] Someone's describing your
7:23symptoms. And then you get sold and then
7:25you you start liking their content. You
7:26buy their supplements. you try out, you
7:28know, all of their different pathways
7:30and you move further and further away
7:32from the science.
7:33>> That's led to plenty of unverified
7:35claims of so-called miracle products or
7:38hacks offering promises of improving
7:40your gut health overnight. And the more
7:43extreme viral trends like colonics,
7:45parasite cleanses, or poop maxing are
7:48likely to actually harm your gut.
7:50>> The colonics is a big one. It actually
7:52will cause negative impacts on your gut
7:54microbiome. Anything that's like a a
7:56very vigorous wash of your gut will
7:58disturb [music] your microbiome and you
8:00definitely don't want something like
8:01that.
8:01>> This whole concept of cleansing and
8:03[music] resetting, there's no evidence.
8:05There's no proof for it.
8:06>> So, what should we really be doing to
8:08keep our gut healthy? The doctors and
8:10researchers that I talked to actually
8:12had some pretty simple and sciencebacked
8:14advice.
8:15>> I think healthy diets like a
8:17Mediterranean diet are very reasonable.
8:18A wide variety of foods is good.
8:20Avoiding things I think is more
8:22important. avoiding preservatives,
8:24avoiding [music] artificial sweeteners.
8:26We know that uh a lot of the
8:28preservatives that are added,
8:29particularly those that are added to
8:31make [music] foods sort of softer and
8:33creamier, um they can cause an
8:35inflammatory response within the gut
8:37lining and also systemic [music]
8:38inflammation.
8:39>> Fiber maxing or at least trying to get a
8:43little more fiber into your diet is one
8:45gut health trend that you should
8:46probably listen to.
8:47>> Number one, it is fiber 100% [music] for
8:49for gut health. We want a little bit of
8:51fiber. We want the fruits. We want the
8:53vegetables. We want the colorful [music]
8:54plates.
8:55>> Fermented foods for most people is a
8:57good thing to incorporate into your diet
8:59if you can tolerate it.
9:00>> There's really no way to hack your gut
9:02or change your microbiome without making
9:04some serious lifestyle changes.
9:06>> Start introducing probiotic foods every
9:08day. Probiotic [music] foods do really
9:10boost the diversity of your microbiome.
9:12>> The closest you can get to your food
9:14source, the closest you can get to
9:15pulling it directly out of the ground
9:16and eating it, that's probably even
9:18[music] better for you than anything you
9:19can get in the grocery store. So, if I
9:20had to distill it all down, I would say
9:22fiber, water, because water and fiber go
9:24together, and stress [music] reduction.
9:26It's really a lot of common sense
9:27things.
9:28>> There's no cure all supplement, food, or
9:31single habit that you can take up that's
9:33going to magically fix your gut health.
9:35>> Anybody who's offering you
9:37oneizefits-all for microbiome and
9:39microbiome therapies, um, just approach
9:42with caution.
9:43>> The best advice is the simplest and
9:45probably the same thing that your mom
9:47has been telling you for years. Eat
9:49healthy, don't stress, get some sleep,
9:52and make good choices.
9:59[music]
