0:36is actually a chemical reaction in the

0:39fiber that is not just a topical coating

0:42that will wash off.

0:44>> This type of denim is used by oilfield

0:46workers and electricians. And the mill

0:49can make a lot more money selling

0:51>> The integrity and quality required in

0:54that area is something that people are

0:57willing to pay for. They really don't

0:59want to wear cheap fire-resistant

1:01clothing.

1:05>> The final test comes when lab workers

1:07expose the fabric to a flame.

1:09The regular denim sample burns right up.

1:12While the flame-resistant sample chars

1:15and the fire burns out.

1:17Along with going high-tech, the mill is

1:19racing to preserve low-tech relying on

1:22vintage machines and [music] techniques

1:23that give it a rare edge in a crowded

1:25market.

1:26This loom was cutting-edge technology

1:28when it was first invented in the

1:29mid-1900s.

1:32>> It was as big a revolution in our

1:34industry as the Model T was

1:36for automobiles. There's no question

1:38about it.

1:40>> Modern looms cut the crosswise threads

1:42[music] after each pass creating fringe

1:44at the edge.

1:46On these older looms, the crosswise

1:48thread is continuous.

1:50>> And you can see [music] it doesn't have

1:52the fringes out to it.

1:54>> This unique look is called selvage

1:55[music] denim.

1:57>> And if get a real large selvage

2:00piece of denim, it's

2:02price points are higher, the

2:04craftsmanship is there, and [music] it's

2:08you're buying a piece of history.

2:11>> Garment makers will sew that edge into

2:13the side seam of jeans, so that when

2:15cuffed, the selvage pokes out.

2:19This look has become a status symbol, a

2:21sign of luxury and craftsmanship.

2:23And people are willing to pay a pretty

2:25penny for it.

2:26>> That's actually a market now that some

2:29people are waiting 2 years just to get

2:32fabric.
