0:17towns are grappling with big tech

0:18companies' attempts to fast-track

0:20approvals for new data center projects.

0:22Companies keep eyeing Nevada because of

0:23its ample cheap land, no corporate

0:25income tax, and generous state tax

0:28abatements. But, does the state have

0:29enough resources to keep up with the

0:31enormous amounts of water and power that

0:33data centers require? 90% of Southern

0:36Nevada's water comes from the Colorado

0:37River via Lake Mead, which has been

0:39receding for decades and is at

0:41critically low water levels. To help

0:42water conservation efforts, in 2023, the

0:45Southern Nevada Water Authority banned

0:47evaporative cooling in new industrial

0:49and commercial buildings. But, those

0:51built or approved before the ban weren't

0:53required to comply. The following year,

0:55pre-existing data centers consumed 716

0:59million gallons of water in Southern

1:01Nevada. One Google data center alone

1:03consumed 352 million gallons. Lake Mead

1:06is the reservoir created by Hoover Dam,

1:08which generates power for Nevada,

1:10Arizona, and California. While the dam

1:12isn't Nevada's only power source, it's

1:14already operating at reduced capacity

1:16due to ongoing drought conditions. Per

1:18KNPR, Nevada's main power utility

1:20company, NV Energy, says it will need

1:22three times the electricity required to

1:24power Las Vegas in order to handle the

1:27energy demand for 12 proposed data

1:29center projects. Communities are pushing

1:31back across the state, from Reno and

1:33Humboldt County in the northwest corner,

1:34where evaporative cooling is still

1:36allowed, to Las Vegas, Henderson,

1:38Boulder City, and Nye County in the

1:40southeast corner. And with this year's

1:41midterm elections, Nevadans want to know

1:43candidates' positions on data centers.

1:45Our incumbent Governor Joe Lombardo says

1:47he supports data centers and is

1:49transforming Nevada into a tech stack

1:51state. His opponent, Nevada Attorney

1:53General Aaron Ford, said if elected, he

1:55will require data centers to pay their

1:57fair share and commit to conserving

1:59water. Both candidates agree that data

2:01center construction creates jobs.

2:03However, those are temporary. While much

2:05of the election attention is on state

2:07and federal offices nationwide, voters

2:09should also pay attention to local races

2:11as city council members and county

2:13commissioners are the decision-makers

2:15for proposed data center projects and

2:17moratoriums. Midterm elections are less

2:19than 4 months away. The future of data

2:21centers and resources will be on ballots

2:24across the country.
