In 2024 the couple bought a 6,600‑square‑meter forest plot about a 40‑minute drive from the Pacific coast. The land, originally built in 1993 for around VND20 billion, cost them roughly one‑sixth of that amount.

Their new life centers on self‑sufficiency. They grow a range of vegetables and fruits, raise chickens for eggs, and keep silkworms for cocoons and pupae. They also chop firewood, make charcoal for cooking, and are completing a well‑water system to replace municipal water.

While Tam works remotely to look after the children and the farm, her husband still travels 28 km each day to his job in the city. This split schedule lets them balance income with hands‑on care for their land.

From their experience we can learn three key ideas: start small and grow food where you live, create independent water and energy sources, and arrange work so you can spend time nurturing both family and the environment.
