The aquarium is watching the whales all day and checking their water intake, breathing, swimming, and how they act with each other.

Shedd reported that two of the three whales that died at the aquarium were from Marineland. Peekachu died on Aug. 25, and a 20‑year‑old beluga called Rain also died.

Marineland said the whales were examined and given a clean bill of health before they left. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson gave the final approval for the move.

The move was the largest transport of captive whales ever. It sent 30 belugas and four dolphins to five aquariums in the United States and Spain, ending whale captivity in Canada.

Earlier moves have also ended with deaths. In 2021 Marineland sent five whales to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut; two died within a year and the third died two years later. Mystic said the whales had pre‑existing conditions, while Marineland said they were healthy when they left.

Shedd Aquarium is still waiting for lab results and says the health of the remaining whales is uncertain.
