From Backing Voices to ARIA Hall of Fame: The Vika & Linda Journey
In the late 1980s they gained attention as backing singers for The Black Sorrows, adding soulful depth to tracks like “Chained To The Wheel”. Their reputation grew as they also lent their voices to artists such as Hunters and Collectors and John Farnham.
They left The Black Sorrows in 1994 to launch a solo career together, feeling that remaining in the background would limit their own storytelling. The decision was difficult, but the sisters were determined to write and perform their own material.
Paul Kelly mentored them, co‑producing their 1994 self‑titled platinum album and the hit “When Will You Fall For Me”. His patient Thursday‑afternoon writing sessions helped the duo find confidence in songwriting and shaped their signature sound.
They are OAM recipients and recent ARIA Hall of Famers, a recognition that celebrates both their musical achievements and the strength of their sibling partnership. Their differing personalities – Vika’s boldness and Linda’s careful planning – have become the engine of their lasting success.
The Bull sisters’ story shows how mentorship, teamwork, and embracing personal differences can turn backing‑singer gigs into a celebrated, award‑winning career.
