EU Grant to Study Hanoi Metro Extension May Ease Commuting
According to the EU grant details, the €10 million will fund a feasibility study, transit‑oriented development planning along the route, research on traffic organization and multimodal connectivity, and capacity‑building to reorganise urban space and improve public‑transport access. All of these tasks are aimed at enhancing the overall efficiency of the city’s transport system.
The proposed extension runs about 11 km, entirely underground, from Hanoi Station to Hoang Mai. Hanoi officials say preparatory work should be finished by the end of 2027, after which detailed designs and financing can be pursued.
Partners reported that the elevated part of Line 3 carried roughly 6.4 million passenger journeys in its first year with a 99 % on‑time rate. The line also avoided about 49 000 tonnes of CO₂ in 2025, a figure expected to rise to around 81 500 tonnes per year by 2030.
Hanoi’s leaders stress that each new metro line helps ease traffic congestion, cuts pollution and links people to jobs, education and other opportunities. If the EU‑funded study leads to a completed underground extension, daily life in Hanoi could become faster, cheaper and healthier for many residents.
