Grindr pays £26 million after privacy lawsuit – a lesson for dating‑app users

In April 2024, UK law firm Austen Hays sued Grindr on behalf of thousands of UK users, claiming the app broke privacy laws by sharing sensitive data before 2020. By June 2025, more than 11,000 claimants had signed up.
The settlement will give £13.0 million to claimants by 31 December 2026 and another £13.0 million by 31 March 2027, totalling the £26 million payment.
Grindr’s statement says it recognises the distress and loss of trust felt by some UK users and that it has overhauled its privacy programme since 2020, focusing on transparency and user control.
The settlement was reached while Grindr was owned and controlled by the Chinese conglomerate Kunlun.
This case shows that sharing sensitive health information can lead to huge legal costs, and it reminds users to demand strong data protection from dating apps.
