Can you move out of the way, though?
0:06
You gotta move over here, sir.
0:09
OK, thank you.
0:12
Hey.
0:14
How you guys doing, huh?
0:17
Today we're going to be introducing
0:18
our two new muntjac, Tyler and Peanut, to Chowlie.
0:22
Muntjac are a small Asian species.
0:24
What I like about them is, they like to hide,
0:26
and they're very, very sneaky.
0:28
They actually were introduced also, in England,
0:31
and they're kind of a nuisance in England.
0:32
I just find it very interesting that an animal from Asia
0:36
was introduced into an area where
0:38
they're not supposed to be.
0:40
They're also called barking deer.
0:41
That's how they communicate with each other
0:43
and warn each other of any kind of danger,
0:45
which I think is kind of cool.
0:47
Here you go, Chowlie girl.
0:48
Chowlie, she's going to be kind of like the grandma
0:50
of the bunch.
0:52
She's an older female, but she's experienced out there.
0:54
So I see her really kind of taking the leadership role.
0:59
There's such a cute animal.
1:00
Everybody thinks they're babies, they are not.
1:02
Tyler and Peanut are still doing a little bit of growing,
1:04
but for the most part, they are a very small deer species.
1:07
They're a year and two years old.
1:10
And they're just really fun.
1:11
Everyone loves Chowlie, so these two are just going to be
1:13
a great addition to our area.
1:20
This is our little makeshift wall
1:22
that we use a lot of times, when we're doing
1:24
introductions with hoofstock.
1:25
And it's solid, so the deer can see it.
1:27
The tough thing about muntjac, is
1:29
they get wound up really easy.
1:31
I mean, they can overheat really quickly.
1:34
It's actually pretty frustrating,
1:36
because sometimes you're like, just calm down,
1:38
it's not that big a deal.
1:39
And it's really a small hoofstock,
1:41
a small ungulate thing.
1:42
These guys are food, so if there is aggression,
1:44
and we get some chasing and stuff like that,
1:46
we can quickly try to time that and separate
1:49
them, and stop that aggression if that happens.
1:52
Let's get two more sheets.
1:54
Hi, cute deer.
1:56
So I've been at the zoo about 24 years.
1:57
And one of the things I love is, I really look at what animals
2:02
behaviors are.
2:04
Excuse me.
2:06
Can we talk some more?
2:08
I try very hard not to analyze them
2:11
and put my own impressions on them, but it's kind of hard
2:13
not to.
2:14
Hey.
2:15
We've been talking all night long.
2:17
This is my formal greeting, I am Tyler.
2:20
It's just-- it geeks me out.
2:23
Easy.
2:25
I got it.
2:26
You're all right.
2:29
I think, yeah.
2:32
I think they'll be excited to be outside.
2:35
All right, good luck.
2:38
OK, ready?
2:46
We open the crates, and as soon as we get them open,
2:48
they, of course, jump out and go pretty quickly.
2:51
They think they kind of realize, oh, we're outside, you know.
2:54
So then I think it kind of calms down
2:56
once they're out of the crate.
2:58
I like this tree, it's very delicious.
3:01
Quick, look at all these grass.
3:04
Where is Chowlie?
3:05
Hope she gets up investigates.
3:08
Oh, there she is, OK.
3:10
Chowlie's still laying down, not caring about anything.
3:14
Chowlie is just laying down right now,
3:16
so she hasn't really gotten up.
3:17
I'm sure she notices something's going
3:19
on, because obviously, us coming in with crates is not her norm.
3:23
But right now, she's calm, she's laying down,
3:25
while they're kind of investigating their area.
3:27
So you have some friends.
3:29
Yeah.
3:31
I think everything went well.
3:32
Hopefully those two will interact through the lattice,
3:34
and we'll see what they do, and we'll continue tomorrow.
