0:00It may be a brand new day, but there's
0:02some nostalgia at play, too. The new
0:04Spidey flick has some deep [music] pulls
0:05in store.
0:07It appears as though the MCU has finally
0:08realized that fans like it when a
0:09superhero takes on a whole roster of
0:11villains in the opening minutes of a
0:12film. [music] The Fantastic Four first
0:14step sees the quartet fight Giganto, Mad
0:16Thinker, and one of Red Ghost's
0:18super-apes. [music]
0:19Spider-Man Brand New Day opens in a
0:20similar fashion with a montage of Spidey
0:23going through his rogues gallery. More
0:24than anything, this montage represents a
0:26passage of time. It's been several years
0:28since the world forgot [music] who Peter
0:29Parker was, so he's been busy being
0:31Spider-Man full-time while his friends
0:33MJ and Ned attend college. We don't get
0:35a ton of time with each villain.
0:37Otherwise, we'd be in the theater
0:37[music] all day.
0:39>> Stay out of my way.
0:42>> We even get brief glimpses at Boomerang,
0:43Tarantula, and Ramrod. There's also
0:45Tombstone, who we thought might have a
0:47bigger role [music] considering his
0:48stature in the Spider-Man mythos.
0:50Scorpion returns later and actually
0:52factors into the plot, but this
0:53particular montage helps make Spidey's
0:55New [music] York City feel alive. It
0:57also borrows a lot of imagery from
0:58Spider-Man comic book covers, [music]
1:00including his very first one on Amazing
1:02Fantasy issue 15.
1:04There's one group of baddies we
1:05overlooked when discussing the opening
1:07montage, the Hand. [music]
1:08They're more commonly affiliated with
1:10Daredevil, but Spidey's no stranger to
1:12the order of villainous [music] ninjas.
1:13We see them pop up later as sort of a
1:15security force working on behalf of the
1:17Department of Damage Control. [music]
1:18Director Bill Metzger talks about how
1:20the Hand really just needs a leader to
1:21show them a better path. Of course, the
1:23Hand isn't really reformed since we find
1:25out later that Metzger is the real
1:26villain who wants to experiment on Jean
1:28[music] Grey and has already killed her
1:29sister Sara. When the film ends, he's
1:32out of the picture. Someone has to
1:33assume that the Hand is back to the wind
1:35and [music] just waiting for someone
1:36else to step up and lead them. We can
1:38already guess who will be leading them
1:39soon. Élodie Yung, who played Elektra in
1:41the Netflix Daredevil series, was
1:43spotted filming for Daredevil: Born
1:44[music] Again season 3. Elektra has
1:46already led the Hand before on The
1:48Defenders, and even though she appeared
1:50to bite the dust at the end of that
1:51[music] show, we never saw a body under
1:53the ruins of Midland Circle. She could
1:54have been hiding in the shadows [music]
1:55for the duration of Spider-Man: Brand
1:57New Day, waiting to emerge once more for
1:59the new season of Born Again.
2:01>> You don't get what you want by day.
2:03You take it by force at night.
2:06>> When he's feeling particularly down,
2:08Peter spots his old best friend Ned and
2:09follows him to a party. There, he
2:11discovers Ned has gone into full
2:12conspiracy [music]
2:13mode trying to determine Spider-Man's
2:15identity because he remembers Spidey
2:16saving him on multiple occasions, but
2:18has no [music] idea who he is because of
2:20Doctor Strange's spell at the end of No
2:21Way Home. He's come up with some pretty
2:24funny [music] deductions. He has a
2:25theory that Spider-Man could be British
2:27since he was spotted in Europe during
2:28Far From Home. Spider-Man actor Tom
2:30Holland is, of course, British in real
2:32life.
2:33>> If you don't get the accent right, then
2:35you may as well not do it.
2:36>> However, Ned seems more certain that
2:38Spider-Man is someone from Midtown
2:40School of Science [music] and
2:40Technology. He's narrowed the list of
2:42suspects down to two possibilities, Mr.
2:45Harrington and Flash. It's as good a
2:47guess as any considering he doesn't
2:49remember Peter at all. [music] And the
2:50moment makes for a nice Easter egg
2:52referencing Flash who appeared in all
2:54the previous MCU Spider-Man movies
2:56without having actor Tony [music]
2:57Revolori there in person.
2:59A mysterious telepath who turns out to
3:01be Jean Grey isn't the only threat Peter
3:03Parker's facing in Spider-Man Brand New
3:05Day. [music] Peter's undergoing some
3:06changes to his body that enhance his
3:08strength and give him organic webbing
3:10that he can shoot out of his wrists.
3:11Unfortunately, he's not fully in control
3:13when this other part of him takes over.
3:15For guidance, Peter visits Bruce Banner
3:17to get information on the inhibitor
3:18device he uses to keep the Hulk at bay
3:20so he can stay human.
3:21>> If you see him like this,
3:23run.
3:24>> [screaming]
3:26>> Peter makes an inhibitor chip of his
3:27very own that suppresses his newfound
3:29arachnid abilities, [music] but it's
3:30clear this device could have other
3:32applications. Turns out it works on
3:34mutants, too. To stop Jean, Peter tries
3:37to put the chip onto [music] her
3:38allowing it to suppress her powers. This
3:40probably won't be the last time we see
3:42something like this in the MCU,
3:43especially with an [music] X-Men movie
3:45on the horizon. With the world fearing
3:47mutants, it's possible that the
3:48government would want to adjust Bruce
3:50and Peter's [music] inhibitor devices to
3:51use on mutants all the time. In other
3:54media, we normally see these [music]
3:55kinds of inhibitors take the form of
3:56collars, which is far more dehumanizing.
3:59Nothing says the government has to get
4:00Peter's specific device to do this.
4:03After all, if he could make it in his
4:04apartment, the government can probably
4:06replicate it.
4:08There's a clever bit [music] of
4:09foreshadowing in Brand New Day that Star
4:10Wars fans probably saw coming, but
4:12others might have missed it in all the
4:13action. [music] There's a scene where
4:15Ned's at his computer and another screen
4:16shows the Hoth battle from Empire
4:18Strikes Back where snow speeder uses a
4:20tow cable to trip one of the massive
4:22AT-ATs. [music] Considering how much
4:23Peter and Ned love building Star Wars
4:25LEGO sets together, it's a safe bet
4:27Peter knows the scene and later draws
4:28inspiration [music] from it during a
4:29battle. Peter uses his webbing to pin
4:31Savage Hulk against the side of a
4:33building, momentarily [music]
4:34restraining him until he breaks free.
4:36But once Hulk is back on his feet, he
4:37realizes loose debris from the [music]
4:39building is wrapped around his legs.
4:40Peter has borrowed the AT-AT tactic,
4:42webbing up Hulk's legs to keep him from
4:44standing upright, [music] sending him
4:45crashing to the ground. It's a great
4:47showcase of Peter's ingenuity, proving
4:49he can't [music] always punch his way
4:50out of trouble.
4:52The Punisher is a great foil for
4:53Spider-Man because their approaches to
4:55dealing with threats are so different.
4:57>> You can't just shoot [music] yourself
4:58out of every situation. Innocent people
5:00get hurt.
5:00>> For instance, Spidey quite simply wants
5:02to negotiate with Jean Grey as she's
5:04holding a large portion of New York
5:05hostage. He appeals to her better nature
5:07and tells her that people care about
5:08her. Frank, meanwhile, is cool with just
5:10shooting her, [music] even pulls the
5:12trigger. Peter jumps in front of the
5:13bullet to save Jean and the Punisher
5:15feels awful about it. [music] He ends up
5:16being the one carrying Spider-Man into
5:18the hospital for care. If you're all
5:20familiar with the Civil [music] War
5:21comics event from back in 2006, that
5:23shot is surely familiar. While there are
5:25some similarities in that opposing sides
5:27headed by Captain America and Iron Man
5:29clash and it's about superhero
5:31registration, [music]
5:32the Civil War comics story and movie are
5:33quite different. In the comics,
5:35Spider-Man unmasks to the world and
5:37initially joins Iron Man's
5:38pro-registration side. But Peter learns
5:40that Iron Man is taking things [music]
5:42too far, so he switches sides. Iron Man
5:44sends a bunch of villains who beat Peter
5:46within an inch of death, only for
5:48Punisher to save his life at the last
5:50second. Spider-Man and the Punisher have
5:52a long, complicated history. In fact,
5:54Punisher was initially introduced as a
5:56Spider-Man antagonist before becoming an
5:58anti-hero in his own right. Even with
6:00their vastly differing ideologies,
6:02there's a grudging respect between the
6:03two. Brand New Day really gets to the
6:05heart of their odd, yet enjoyable
6:07dynamic.
6:08When Brand New Day starts, Spider-Man
6:10and the Punisher nod toward some of that
6:11shared history. [music] In particular,
6:13they repeatedly bring up an incident on
6:15Staten Island. Frank's also the only one
6:17Peter can rely on to look after MJ when
6:19Jean Grey's trying to get to her. Peter
6:21knows where Punisher hangs out, which is
6:23an old ship called Golden Girl converted
6:25[music] into a booby-trapped fortress.
6:26The decommissioned ship isn't just a
6:28convenient place for Punisher to lay
6:30low. It's a reference to the comics
6:31where Punisher would keep an assortment
6:33of firearms on a boat of the same name.
6:35Golden Girl first appeared in
6:36Spectacular Spider-Man issue number 141
6:39from writer Gerry Conway and artist Sal
6:41Buscema. That arc culminates in
6:43Spider-Man and Punisher facing off
6:44against a villain called the Persuader,
6:46who we kind of doubt we'll ever see in a
6:48movie.
6:49If you've been paying attention at all,
6:51you know how far Marvel and Sony went to
6:52keep the news that Sadie Sink was
6:54playing Jean Grey a secret. But who are
6:57you?
6:57>> We're so close. We're so close. I can't
7:00say.
7:01>> That meant it was also secret that
7:02Jean's older sister, Sarah, was in the
7:04movie, too. In the comics, Sarah had a
7:06very limited role, just occasionally
7:08popping up whenever Jean's family did.
7:09She didn't have mutant powers, though
7:11she did become a vocal [music] mutant
7:12rights advocate, a position that ended
7:14up costing Sarah her life. In the MCU,
7:17Sarah does have powers, [music] though.
7:19She and Jean develop theirs together,
7:20and it spooks their mom, causing them to
7:22both be runaways. The [music] Department
7:23of Damage Control abducts Sarah, and
7:25Jean later learns that her sister died
7:27as a result of experimentation in Damage
7:29Control's custody. [music] Given that
7:30Sarah never had much of a role in the
7:32comics, it's unlikely we'll see her
7:33again. But every superhero needs a
7:35tragic origin story, and now we have
7:37Jean's for the MCU.
7:39It's no great shock that Brand New Day
7:41has a post-credit scene, but what's in
7:43it is a bit of a curveball. It brings
7:45[music] us back to the Spidey tracker
7:47app that Ned had been using throughout
7:48the movie. At least at first, it looks
7:50like Spidey is safely in New [music]
7:51York as usual. Maybe together we can
7:54help him make it a friendlier
7:55neighborhood for everybody.
7:56>> [music]
7:57>> But then, Spidey appears to leave the
7:58neighborhood and the planet. By all
8:01appearances, Spidey's in the far [music]
8:02reaches of space. Of course, we've seen
8:04Holland's Spider-Man leave Earth before.
8:06In Avengers: Infinity War, [music] he
8:08went to Titan and battled Thanos
8:10alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy,
8:11Iron Man, and Doctor Strange. [music]
8:13This new cosmic sojourn seems to
8:15indicate that Spidey will be off in the
8:16stars for another Avengers adventure,
8:18either in Doomsday or Secret Wars. For
8:21Secret Wars in particular, the
8:22implication might be that Spider-Man has
8:24been transported to [music] Battleworld.
8:26In the 1984 Marvel Super Heroes Secret
8:29Wars comic series, a powerful being
8:31named the Beyonder makes Battleworld in
8:32deep space out of the parts of nearby
8:34planets. [music]
8:35In the 2015 version of Secret Wars,
8:37Doctor Doom creates his own Battleworld
8:39out of various universes after the
8:41Marvel Universe [music] gets destroyed.
8:43The MCU's 616 universe seems to still
8:46exist given that the Spidey tracker app
8:48is still operational, but that doesn't
8:50necessarily mean Spidey isn't on
8:52Battleworld. Whatever the case, it's
8:54clear Spidey will return and it's likely
8:56he's joining the Avengers madness to
8:57come.
