Teenager Kills 8 in Thailand School Shooting
A teenager in Thailand killed at least five people and then himself at a school. He had earlier shot his grandparents.
The people killed at the school were teachers and staff. The 14-year-old student used a gun that belonged to his grandfather.
Students ran out of the school as the wounded were taken to ambulances. Teachers hugged each other and cried.
A student thought the sounds were firecrackers or someone banging an object.
The student did not think it was a gun at first. He heard many shots, then it was quiet, and then it started again.
A police spokesman said the suspected shooter was among the seven people killed at the school. Fifteen people were injured.
The Education Minister said both teachers and students were hurt. The shooter was a student.
This is the second school shooting in Thailand this year.
An emergency worker described arriving as the shooting was happening. His team treated students with injuries.
The emergency worker was called to treat the teenage shooter after hearing a final shot.
The team found the perpetrator had shot himself in the head and collapsed. They started CPR.
The suspect was taken to the hospital.
The school had around 3,100 students and 147 teachers.
The Prime Minister said he was sad for those who died and for the country.
Gun ownership and violence are not uncommon in Thailand.
Thailand's worst mass killing happened in 2022 when 36 people were killed.
After a 2023 shooting, Thailand ordered gun control measures, including a ban on new licences.
Longer-term measures included medical checks for gun owners.
Thailand has a high rate of gun ownership, with around 15 guns per 100 residents.
