Why This Saigon Home Replaced Its Front Door with a Moat
Instead of a door, a fish‑filled moat separates the street from the garage, and visitors cross it on stepping stones; a front fence and a rear vegetable garden also help keep the space private.
Inside, privacy is created by the layout—hallways, angled walls, and plant partitions—so even the bathroom has no door.
The roof slopes low over the front and back, providing shade, while a central skylight fitted with Z‑shaped louvers pulls warm air upward and lets daylight flood the rooms; the interior is finished with exposed stone, brick and wood, giving a rustic feel.
By using elevation changes, water, vegetation and ventilation instead of traditional doors, the design shows how architects can solve the problems of space, light and airflow in dense city neighborhoods.
