Missing Canadian Found Safe Highlights Communication Challenges in Nepal Floods

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said one of the 30 Canadians who were missing after the Nepal floods has been found safe. She added that the person could not be reached because of communication outages, but contact was made again on Tuesday.
The floods began a week ago after a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border area between Nepal and China. The disaster has killed more than 1,100 people and left over 3,900 missing.
Nepal’s foreign ministry says about 590 foreign nationals from 39 countries are still missing. The lack of communication makes it difficult for families and governments to know who is safe.
Canada will send more than 18,000 emergency items from Canadian Red Cross stockpiles and has already pledged $5 million in humanitarian aid, showing the importance of quick international help.
