Origins Hub Marks a New Milestone in Canada’s Climate Plan
The hub will initially store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, making it the largest carbon‑capture facility in Canada.
Origins will first capture emissions from two nearby plants – the Northwest Redwater Sturgeon Refinery and the Nutrien Redwater fertilizer facility – both located in Alberta’s industrial heartland.
The new hub will link to the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, a pipeline that runs from the Edmonton region to Clive, and will also connect to Enhance Energy’s existing carbon‑capture site in the same town.
Enhance Energy already runs Alberta’s largest carbon‑capture site in Clive, which the company says has permanently stored more than nine million tonnes of CO₂ since 2020.
Federal energy minister Tim Hodgson said the project will help Canada become an environmentally responsible energy superpower. He added that the federal and provincial governments and industry are working together as “one Team Canada” to build big things again.
Alberta energy minister Brian Jean said the hub will help the province produce the most responsible oil and gas in the world and will create jobs in rural Alberta.
By permanently storing millions of tonnes of CO₂, the Origins hub demonstrates how large‑scale carbon capture can fit into Canada’s climate strategy, offering both emissions reductions and economic benefits for the region.
