Canada’s Dependence on U.S. Tech Platforms Shows Up in the ‘Lake America’ Map Change

Google Maps now labels Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for users in the United States after an executive order from President Donald Trump. The same label also appears on some Canadian government websites and on the online maps of the country’s biggest banks.

The order also led U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to say that President Trump asked Apple to change the lake’s name on its navigation apps. Apple has not responded to requests for comment.

Tech experts say the episode shows how Canadian consumers and businesses are “locked in” to U.S.-owned platforms, with almost no non‑American alternatives. Anne Pasek, Canada Research Chair in Media, Culture and the Environment at Trent University, warned that Canadians “live under the shadow of American tech monopolies” and that their digital lives fall under U.S. jurisdiction.

Mapping services from Google and Apple are not only used for directions; they also supply hours, contact details, reviews, address auto‑completion for e‑commerce sites, and traffic data for rides‑hare and food‑delivery apps. Google said the change follows its policy of showing local names when a body of water has different names in different countries.

Until recently Canada had a home‑grown mapping option. Toronto‑based Avenza Systems was bought by Maine‑based Blue Marble Geographics in a deal that closed in April, ending the domestic alternative.

Emily Osborne, policy research associate at the Canadian Shield Institute, says Canada’s reliance on U.S. services such as Amazon Web Services, Visa and MasterCard creates “choke points” that could be used as leverage. She cited the AWS outage last fall, which disrupted many Canadian businesses, as an example of this vulnerability.

The reliance on U.S. tech means fewer choices for Canadians, exposure to foreign law, and the risk that essential services could be limited or cut off in a diplomatic dispute.
