Netflix is being sued for losing a hard drive.

A UK company and filmmaker are suing Netflix for $105 million US. They say a copy of an unreleased Nicolas Cage movie was stolen from Netflix's LA office. The movie is a Second World War spy thriller.

The theft is a big problem for the movie's commercial prospects. The lawsuit says this in documents filed in California federal court.

The film is still looking for distributors, but the theft makes it harder to sell. It could be pirated online.

The writer-producer has invested over $45 million US in the project. He is named as a plaintiff alongside Op-Fortitude Ltd.

A hard drive with the movie was given to Netflix on June 15. Netflix was told to delete any copies and inform them when the drive was ready to be picked up.

After a week, Netflix said the drives, including the one with the movie, had been stolen from desks.

Ottawa plans to end the 'Netflix tax' and replace it with public Canadian content funding.

Netflix says it is not responsible because the drive lacked proper safeguards.

Unreleased titles are usually provided through password-protected links or encrypted digital cinema packages.

The film's producers shared an unencrypted copy, Netflix said. When the drive went missing, Netflix notified security and the filmmakers.

The lawsuit says Netflix did not provide key information about the investigation.
