Scientists Alert: Very Strong El Niño

The Met Office is the United Kingdom's weather service. It warns that a very strong El Niño is arriving soon. El Niño means a change in the Pacific Ocean. The surface water becomes much warmer than normal. Right now it is already more than two degrees Celsius warm. It could reach three degrees Celsius warm later this year. Such warmth has never been recorded since 1950.

El Niño returns every two to seven years. Strong Pacific winds become weaker during this time. Because of this, warm surface water shifts eastward quickly. The ocean then releases heat into the air.

The result is a warmer planet overall. The Met Office predicts 2027 may be the hottest year. India is likely to get far less rain. Britain might see a wet and stormy autumn. Australia could experience very dry conditions. Peru and Ecuador may face serious flooding.
