Canada to Hold 3 Special Elections

Liberals need one win to keep control of the government.

Prime Minister Mark Carney called three special elections. They are in North Vancouver-Capilano, Beaches-East York, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. These areas are in B.C., Ontario, and Quebec.

The special elections will be on August 31. This was announced on the prime minister's website on Sunday.

Candidates will replace former MPs Jonathan Wilkinson, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, and Richard Martel. Wilkinson is now Canada's ambassador to the European Union.

The Liberals need to win one election to keep control. They currently have 171 seats, not counting the Speaker.

When MPs return in September, the Liberals will have 170 seats. This is because Steven Guilbeault is stepping down on August 28.

The opposition parties will have 165 seats in September. This is due to other vacancies and resignations.

NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice will resign after the Quebec election is called.

If the Liberals win one election, they will have 171 seats again. This means they can still control the government with the Speaker's help.

The special election clock is ticking. MPs are resigning, which affects the Liberals' majority.

The Liberals have chosen their candidates. They are Braeden Caley, Tanveer Shahnawaz, and Daniel Gobeil.

CBC asked the Conservative Party about their candidates for the special elections.

The NDP is looking for candidates and will announce them soon.

The Bloc Québécois chose Caroline Dubé as their candidate for Chicoutimi-Le Fjord on Sunday.
