Why Supporting Fathers in the NICU Matters for Family Mental Health

Central Queensland musician Trent Richardson became a father in August 2025 when his son Archie was born with septo‑optic dysplasia, a rare condition that affects the brain, vision and coordination. Archie was delivered by emergency caesarean, separated from his mother, and spent more than two months in a Brisbane neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The experience left Richardson feeling terrified and isolated, so he wrote the ballad “Promise You Now” to reach other parents who are coping with NICU trauma. Since the song’s release, he says he has received a lot of support from families who understand the same fear and uncertainty.

Obstetrician and researcher Dr Alka Kothari points out that about one in five babies nationwide require special or NICU care, and unexpected complications arise in roughly one‑third of pregnancies. She explains that these events have a significant impact on the mental health of fathers and partners, who often receive limited support from the medical system.

Dr Kothari stresses that peer support is especially powerful. She has worked with fathers and non‑birthing parents to develop four best‑practice principles: better engagement with health professionals, recognition of partners as users of perinatal services, educational opportunities to help them advocate for their families, and systematic mental‑health screening and support.

By acknowledging fathers’ emotional needs and providing both professional and peer‑based help, hospitals can reduce trauma for the whole family and improve overall wellbeing.
