TV Crime‑Show Host Sentenced to Death for Drug Trafficking

A Cairo court sentenced Sarah Khalifa, the 39‑year‑old host of the TV programme ‘Mission Impossible’, to death by hanging, along with 11 other defendants, for manufacturing and trafficking synthetic drugs and for possessing unlicensed firearms.

The court found the group guilty of forming an organised criminal gang that procured raw materials for narcotics, intended to traffic the drugs, and held illegal firearms and ammunition. Authorities seized more than 750 kilograms of narcotics and raw materials, and discovered two apartments used as laboratories.

Before issuing the death sentence, the judges consulted the Grand Mufti of Egypt, a step required by Egyptian law in all capital cases. The verdict can still be appealed.

In addition to the death sentence, Khalifa received a five‑year prison term for a separate case involving the kidnapping and assault of a young man.

Egypt’s legal system applies the death penalty to drug trafficking, pre‑meditated murder, terrorism, and certain rape offences. In 2025, Egyptian courts issued 541 death sentences.
