Canada’s New Mega‑Deduction Could Redraw the Investment Map

At the Canada Investment Summit, the government announced a productivity mega‑deduction. It will let companies expense the total cost of new investments in sectors such as machinery, equipment, clean energy and zero‑emission vehicles.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the goal is simple – to make Canada the most attractive G7 place to invest. The expansion widens the pool of eligible assets from about 15 % of all assets to roughly two‑thirds.

According to the government, the measure will cut Canada’s marginal effective tax rate from 13 % to 6.4 %, the lowest level among G7 nations. The program is expected to cost an estimated $36 billion over five years.

Economists Randall Bartlett and Jim Stanford note that the immediate write‑off could boost productivity and give firms a reason to stay in Canada rather than move abroad. They see the deduction as a stronger incentive than a blanket corporate‑tax cut.

If the deduction works as intended, it could lower the marginal tax burden for many businesses, encourage faster spending on modern assets, and improve Canada’s competitiveness in the global market, while the government monitors the long‑term fiscal impact.
