Cultural safety: the key to unlocking Indigenous talent in Australian netball

Netball is Australia's most‑played women's sport, yet it has produced very few elite Indigenous players. Only three Aboriginal women have ever worn the Australian Diamonds jersey – Marcia Ella‑Duncan, Sharon Finnan‑White and, after a 22‑year gap, Donnell Wallam.

Wallam’s 2024 move to New Zealand, where she praised the clubs’ respect for inclusion and culture, highlighted problems at her former side, the Queensland Firebirds. After allegations of a “toxic culture” at the Firebirds, Netball Australia opened an investigation and began a series of measures to embed cultural safety for First Nations athletes.

One of those measures was the creation of the Black Swans, the nation’s first First Nations netball team, announced after Ali Tucker‑Munro was appointed General Manager First Nations. The Black Swans now compete in the annual First Nations Tournament, now in its third year, and in the Spirit Series that started in 2026, where they went undefeated against Australia’s Pacific neighbours.

Tucker‑Munro, a former Diamonds squad member, also helped launch the First Nations Tournament in Melbourne and set up a First Nations Cultural Council. Last year the council completed a cultural‑safety review that consulted coaches, umpires and athletes to identify systemic barriers.

Today only two Indigenous players are contracted in Super Netball. Players such as Gabby Coffey and Scarlet Jauncey say that visible role models are essential – “If you can’t see it, you can’t be it,” Coffey told ABC Sport.

Both Coffey and Jauncey stress that cultural safety means more than a policy; it requires community listening, support for athletes who must relocate, and practical help with financial and geographic challenges. Without a safe, inclusive environment, many First Nations talent remain on the fringe of elite competition.

By embedding cultural safety and expanding pathways like the Black Swans, Netball Australia hopes to break the long‑standing barriers that have kept Indigenous athletes out of the top tier and to inspire the next generation of First Nations netballers.
