How a Simple License Scan Can End Up on the Dark Web

A dark‑web service called Nexus announced that it had collected more than 153 million driver’s licence records from the United States and Canada. The FBI confirmed in a statement to Reuters that it is investigating the Nexus incident.

Researchers examined the leaked data and matched timestamps on some records to real‑world scans. One set of licences was linked to a Hertz rental‑car counter, while another matched a visit to the Planet 13 marijuana dispensary.

The connection to Planet 13 pointed investigators toward IDScan.net, a Louisiana‑based identity‑verification company that supplies scanners to many businesses. IDScan.net has acknowledged a security incident that may have let an unauthorized third party access or copy scanned IDs stored in its cloud.

KrebsOnSecurity’s test of Nexus returned about 11.5 million pages of results, showing the database’s size and that records grew by nearly 400,000 in 24 hours. The test supported the possibility that the collection was enormous, though it does not prove the exact number of unique individuals.

These findings illustrate how a routine licence swipe – whether at a car‑rental desk or a dispensary – can be captured, stored and eventually appear on a criminal marketplace. Once the data is out, thieves can use the high‑quality images for sophisticated identity‑theft schemes.

The breach reminds consumers to ask businesses how they handle scanned IDs and to consider protective steps such as credit monitoring or freezes. Awareness of where your licence data goes is the first line of defence.
