Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton 6‑3, 7‑6 (2), 5‑7, 6‑2 in the US Open final on Sunday, securing his second major title after winning the French Open earlier this year.

The victory extended a long gap for American men: no player from the United States has won a New York‑based Grand Slam since Andy Roddick in 2003, a fact that added extra pressure on Shelton.

Shelton entered the match hoping to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam since 2003 and also the first Black man to claim the men’s title since Arthur Ashe in 1968.
