What Rachel Apa’s Tragic Death Teaches About Ignoring Pain During a Marathon

Rachel Apa’s sudden collapse during the 2026 New York City Marathon sparked a sobering discussion about the hidden dangers of overexertion. Understanding the warning signs she sent can help other runners avoid a similar fate.

Around mile 24, Apa fell to the ground in Central Park. Her father, Steve Apa, said she was in "perfect health, perfect shape" before the race, emphasizing how quickly a seemingly fit athlete can deteriorate.

Around mile 18 she texted her father “Ow,” then a mile later “Ow ow.” At mile 23 she sent a brief “final stretch” before collapsing.

A nearby bystander performed CPR while race medical personnel rushed her to a hospital. Steve Apa told The New York Times that her death was caused by rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition triggered by extreme overexertion, and she passed away later that night.
