Why Techo Airport’s Passenger Numbers Lag Behind Its Stunning Design

Despite its stunning design, Techo International Airport has not seen the passenger boom many expected.

Sin Chansereyvutha, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of Cambodia’s Secretariat of Civil Aviation, explained that passenger traffic through the new airport has fallen short of forecasts because the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East are discouraging travelers. At the same time, cargo volumes have continued to rise steadily.

The airport, a large‑scale 4F facility, can receive the world’s biggest jets such as the Airbus A380‑800 and Boeing 747‑800. Its architecture earned it a place in the Prix Versailles award as the only Southeast Asian airport among the world’s most beautiful, described as “a symbol of renewal that reflects permanence and stability.”

To capitalize on the growing freight demand, the airport is constructing modern cargo warehouses that meet international standards and is setting up aircraft‑repair workshops together with partners from Singapore.

Techo International Airport will celebrate its first anniversary of handling both domestic and international flights on 20 October, marking a year of rapid infrastructure development even as passenger numbers remain modest.
