1:14The excavation site is the result of

1:16nearly 10 years of research by a team of

1:19experts led by architect Nguyen Xuan

1:21Thang, who compared an extensive

1:23research dossier before submitting it to

1:25the relevant authorities.

1:28By comparing archival documents from the

1:30former Saigon regime, reports from the

1:32US Military Assistance Command, and the

1:35battlefield maps and diagrams, the team

1:37concluded that the mass grave was

1:39created on February 12th, 1968.

1:44>> At first, all we had was a photograph

1:46showing a row of graves. Later, another

1:49image helped us identify the area that

1:51is now Le Thi Rieng Park. By combining

1:54aerial photographs with other research

1:56methods, we were able to pinpoint the

1:58burial site with only a very small

2:00margin of error.

2:04>> On the morning of the second day of Tet,

2:06trucks carrying the bodies arrived. They

2:09said that the bodies had been collected

2:11from the radio station and the US

2:13Embassy. Thick wooden planks were laid

2:15down and then bulldozers covered them

2:18with earth.

2:21>> Now approaching his 100th birthday,

2:23Colonel Tu Cang continues to recall his

2:26wartime experiences through his books.

2:28One of them described the 1968 Spring

2:31Offensive and General Uprising, during

2:33which he remained inside Saigon to

2:36monitor developments and report back to

2:38headquarters.

2:43>> That first wave resulted in heavy

2:45casualties. The commander assessed that

2:4880% of my commando unit had been wiped

2:51out. All 17 were either killed or

2:53captured. Not a single one survived.

3:00>> The 1968 Spring Offensive and General

3:02Uprising targeted key installations of

3:04the Saigon regime across cities

3:06throughout Southern Vietnam, prompting

3:08the United States to scale back its

3:10bombing campaign north of the 17th

3:12parallel and enter peace negotiations.

3:15But the victory came at a tremendous

3:17cost with tens of thousands of soldiers

3:19and civilians losing their lives.

3:22Soon the journey home may begin for the

3:24martyrs who believed to lie beneath Le

3:26Thi Rieng Park. The excavation is

3:29expected to become one of Vietnam's

3:30largest
