EU steps up AI and defence technology | Vietnam Today

0:00The European Union is accelerating the
0:01use of AI, drones, robots, and
0:04autonomous systems in defense. A notable
0:06point here is that beyond investing in
0:08new technologies, the EU is also
0:10changing how they are tested and
0:12developed, drawing more directly on
0:15lessons from the conflict in Ukraine.
0:17One of the key initiatives is the Brave
0:19Tech EU, a defense technology
0:21partnership between the European Union
0:24and Ukraine. The program brings together
0:26Ukraine's ability to develop and adapt
0:28technology rapidly on the battlefield
0:31with Europe's research, investment, and
0:33industrial capacity. Uh companies,
0:35startups, and uh tech teams can test
0:37emerging systems with military forces in
0:40conditions close to real combat. In
0:43August, the EU opened a new Brave Tech
0:45EU selection round. Trials include
0:48autonomous and swarm attack drones
0:50operating under electronic jamming,
0:52ground sensor networks, and systems
0:55linking target detection directly to
0:57combat platforms. A key requirement is
1:00that technologies can be adapted in the
1:01field through software updates, payload
1:04changes, or hardware fixes and quickly
1:07returned to testing. The trials are
1:09expected to take place in Germany and
1:11Romania this November with armed forces
1:14directly involved.
1:18There is a broader shift taking place in
1:20Europe's defense thinking. Military
1:22technology must not only be advanced to
1:25but also developed, tested, and adapted
1:27at a faster rate. Yet, turning a
1:29promising technology into something that
1:31can be deployed at scale remains a major
1:33challenge. Our Europe correspondent
1:35reports.
1:41>> Robots, drones, artificial intelligence.
1:45Europe has no shortage of technologies
1:47that could shape the next generation of
1:49weapons. Germany and other EU countries
1:52are strong in precision engineering,
1:54automation, sensors, robotics, and
1:57dual-use technologies, but Ukraine has
2:00exposed a critical weakness. Advanced
2:02technology alone does not guarantee
2:04battlefield advantage. A highly
2:06sophisticated system may have little
2:08impact if it takes years to develop and
2:11can only be produced in small numbers.
2:14By contrast, drones and electronic
2:16warfare systems may need to be
2:18redesigned within weeks as new
2:20countermeasures emerge. That reality is
2:23forcing Europe to rethink how defense
2:25technology is developed.
2:27>> Obviously, there is one objective that
2:29we're having to on our side is to create
2:32synergies between the tech industry and
2:34the defense industry. Uh this has been
2:36also highlighted in the industry
2:38transformation roadmap. So, what is the
2:40objective here is that of course we want
2:43AI and tech to be embraced by the
2:45defense industry. This is needed. We see
2:48it in Ukraine on a daily basis, but all
2:50of this has to be done in um um a secure
2:53and in a responsible way.
2:55>> But, AI only becomes military power when
2:58it can move from the laboratory to the
3:00production line.
3:01That transition has often been slow in
3:03Europe.
3:04Testing, procurement, and large-scale
3:06production can take years. The EU is now
3:09trying to bring startups, civilian
3:11technology companies, and dual-use firms
3:14closer to the defense sector. At the
3:16same time, it is deepening cooperation
3:19with Ukraine, where technologies are
3:21being tested and adapted directly
3:23through battlefield experience.
3:27>> And we can provide both
3:29defense industrial bases with the
3:32impetus needed to decisively step up
3:35investment and production.
3:38>> This is where the competition is also
3:40changing.
3:41The question is no longer simply who has
3:45the better AI model or the smarter
3:48robot. It is who can turn those
3:50technologies into hundreds or thousands
3:53of systems fast enough, cheaply enough,
3:55and with the ability to keep improving
3:57them as the battlefield changes.
4:00Military strength was one measure mainly
4:03by the number of tanks, aircrafts, or
4:05missile a country possesses. AI is
4:08adding a new measure, the speed at which
4:11technology can be turned into
4:13operational capability. For Europe, the
4:16race is therefore not only about
4:17building smarter system, it is also
4:20about producing them faster, in greater
4:23numbers, and adapting them more quickly
4:25than the adversary.
