0:00Our little Spider-Man is growing up.
0:02Peter Parker underwent some big changes
0:04in Brand New Day. Here's how it happens
0:06and all the new stuff he can do.
0:08Spoilers ahead. Pretty early on in Brand
0:10New Day, Peter notices that weird things
0:12are happening with his [music] body.
0:13During a fight with a scorpion, he wigs
0:15out a little bit and accidentally hurts
0:16some bystanders. [music] That's when he
0:18goes to visit Bruce Banner and discovers
0:20he's undergoing a genetic mutation
0:21that's causing all these changes. If DNA
0:24is mutating, it would be [music]
0:25enormously dangerous.
0:28Peter tries to contain his mutation with
0:30an inhibitor similar to the one Banner
0:32uses to keep the Hulk [music] in check.
0:33Eventually though, Peter simply comes to
0:35accept how he has evolved and live with
0:36it. As soon as the trailer is revealed
0:38that this was going to be a plotline,
0:40fans started recalling a 2006 comic
0:42story called The Other. That story opens
0:44with Peter having unexplained weird
0:46dreams and blackouts. He learns that
0:48he's apparently dying and the super
0:50strong villain Morlin speeds that up by
0:52beating Peter to a bloody [music] pulp.
0:53Everyone believes that Peter is dead,
0:55but he's actually going through a
0:56metamorphosis somewhat like the one he
0:58experiences in the movie. Peter sheds
1:00his skin, goes into a cocoon, and
1:02emerges with new, more spider-like
1:04powers. Among those are stingers, fangs,
1:06night vision, and the ability to carry
1:08things and people by sticking them to
1:10[music] his back. Those are not
1:12specifically the new powers he gets in
1:14Brand New Day. So, let's dig into what
1:16he does.
1:17One key new power Spidey gets in Brand
1:19New Day is that he can produce his own
1:21webs, like from his body. [screaming]
1:25>> What the
1:25>> The theme song always said Spider-Man
1:27can do whatever a spider can. But for
1:29most of his comics history, Spidey
1:31hasn't actually been able to make and
1:32shoot webs on his own. Don't believe
1:34every song you hear. [music]
1:39>> Since his origin all the way back in
1:411962, Peter's webs have mainly come from
1:43mechanical web shooters he built.
1:45They're on his wrists, hidden under his
1:47costume. The various movie versions of
1:48Spider-Man have gone back and forth on
1:50this. Director Sam Ramy decided to
1:52dispense with the [music] mechanical web
1:54shooters. He just made spinning webs any
1:56size. One of the powers Tobey Magcguire
1:58Spider-Man got from his power granting
2:00spider bite. Both Andrew Garfield and
2:02Tom Holland Spideies were introduced
2:03with the mechanical [music] web shooters
2:05though. The difference even got brought
2:06up in No Way Home.
2:09>> Wa!
2:10>> That came out of you.
2:11>> Yeah.
2:12>> You can't do that, huh?
2:14>> No. How on earth does that even Anyway,
2:16we're getting sidetracked.
2:17>> Now, Holland is a member of the Toby
2:19Club. Looks like Peter has occasionally
2:21had organic webs in the comics, too.
2:23Namely, right after the Remy movies came
2:25out. But other versions of Spider-Man
2:27have had organic webbing from the get-
2:28go, like Spider-Man 2099 and Peter's
2:31clone, Kane.
2:33The Peter Parker we see in Brand New Day
2:35has grown up a lot. He's more mature and
2:37self-reliant. He doesn't have the
2:39resources of Tony Stark to fall back on.
2:41So maybe, just maybe, he's outgrown the
2:43term Peter Tingle. It helps that Happy
2:45Hogan doesn't remember who he is anymore
2:47to remind him, but also his danger sense
2:49has leveled up considerably. There are
2:51moments in the movie where his eyes go
2:53black and he seems to go into a sort of
2:55fighting fugue [music] state where he
2:57knows what his opponents are going to do
2:58before they even do it. Spider Sense has
3:00been a key Spider-Man ability since the
3:02very beginning. It's something Peter
3:04quite frankly needs since he doesn't
3:06have worldclass fight training and is
3:08incredibly vulnerable to injury. Oh my
3:11back.
3:12>> It even helps show when a villain of his
3:13is a serious threat. If they can bypass
3:16his spider sense, which a few have the
3:18ability to do, they're a step above. On
3:20top of that, Peter's spider sense can
3:22occasionally overload when there's quite
3:23simply too [music] much danger around
3:25him, leaving him almost helpless. It's
3:27unclear at this point just what
3:28Holland's Spidey having this amped up
3:30spider sense will ultimately mean. But
3:32the same thing has happened in the
3:33comics a handful of times. For instance,
3:35just before the events of the other,
3:36Spider-Man's spider sense was enhanced
3:38by a villain named the queen. In a very
3:40recent comic story, Peter trained with
3:42Daredevil to hone his spider sense into
3:44its true form, giving him the ability to
3:46enter a translike state while fighting.
3:48Sort of like what happens in Brand New
3:49Day. If there's one descriptive word
3:52you'd surely use to describe Spider-Man,
3:54it's [music] agile. The guy can move.
3:56So, how does someone who's already among
3:57the most agile people alive become more
3:59so? Beats us, but the robot voice says
4:02it happened.
4:02>> Yeah, you're okay. increased agility.
4:05>> Sorry about that.
4:06>> To be real, this seems to be tied into
4:08Spider-Man's more attuned to spider
4:10sense. The danger warnings can get
4:11better and better all you want, but
4:13Peter's ability to react to what the
4:15warnings tell him has to level up with
4:16it for him to actually avoid the danger.
4:18[music]
4:19One of the results of the other was
4:20Peter gaining even better reflexes to
4:22make him faster and more agile. He can
4:24make himself glide to a car going full
4:26speed. So, yeah, Spider-Man can be more
4:28agile without becoming full out the
4:30Flash. But it's worth noting that in the
4:32comics, all of Peter's other upgrades
4:34got undone with the brand new day
4:36storyline of all things.
4:39It's easy to forget that Spider-Man is
4:41really strong. He fights a lot of
4:43superpowered bad guys and hangs around
4:45with other superheroes like say Thor and
4:47the Hulk who can outb him with ease. But
4:49compared to anyone without superpowers,
4:51Spider-Man is immensely strong. He can
4:53lift a car over his head. He's held up
4:56buildings. He's known for often lifting
4:58a whole bunch of rubble off of himself
4:59after remembering what he's fighting
5:01for.
5:03>> Come on, Spider-Man.
5:05Come on, Spider-Man.
5:07>> Having strength beyond his typical
5:08punching power put Spidey on a more
5:10equal level [music] with his superhero
5:11contemporaries. So, if he were to say
5:13get placed in a Secret War style
5:15scenario where he's forced to duke it
5:17out with his peers, he'd have a fighting
5:18chance. Just spitballing ideas here.
5:21Spidey has upped his strength a few
5:22times in the comics. [music] Perhaps
5:24most notably in the story where he
5:25gained the powers of the Enigma Force
5:27and became Captain Universe for a brief
5:29time. That made him strong enough to
5:30punch the Hulk into space. We don't
5:33think he's going to be that strong
5:34because of his mutation, but we'll see.
