Kennedy Center Board Votes to Add Trump's Name and Close Building for 2 Years
The battle over the Kennedy Center's future got worse on Thursday. President Trump's allies on the board made new moves to honor him. They want to make physical changes to the building that could go against a federal court order.
The board voted to add Trump's name to the building's front. It would say 'The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.'
The area in front of the building would be named after Trump. Most of the space would be closed for two years for big renovations.
A Democrat on the board, Joyce Beatty, said these changes are a big test of U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper.
Judge Cooper ruled that letters with Trump's name on the building were added illegally. He ordered them removed. The Republican administration couldn't get the courts to change this decision.
Beatty said this new move is an attempt to go around the court's ruling. It goes against the laws Congress made.
A Kennedy Center representative did not immediately comment.
The board meeting focused on how much of the building needs to be closed for renovations. The management says these are needed for safety.
Trump announced plans to close the Kennedy Center for renovations starting in July.
The board considered three options for closures. One was a complete closure, another was a partial closure, and the third was a series of phased closures.
The board decided to close the building for two years. Some programming might still happen in an outdoor space.
This decision could raise questions about if the board really thought about all the options.
