CCTV footage leads to conviction of foreign domestic worker for abusing dementia patient
Seran had been caring for a 69‑year‑old woman since March 2023. The woman suffered from Alzheimer’s dementia, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, diverticulosis and hyperlipidaemia, and could not feed or care for herself.
On the morning of 20 April, while trying to give the woman breakfast, Seran grew angry when the victim became frustrated. She slapped the woman twice on the face, once on the head, then hit her hand, legs and feet and pinched her nose twice.
The assault was recorded by CCTV cameras that the victim’s children had installed in the home. That evening the son received a video from his brother, called the police, and Seran was arrested.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Jun Kai asked the court for a term of 11 to 13 weeks, noting that the CCTV footage was crucial to detecting the crime. District Judge Lim Wee Meng sentenced Seran to 11 weeks, citing the need for deterrence in domestic‑violence cases and the victim’s vulnerability.
Seran admitted that she had previously assaulted the woman to stop her “nagging,” and the court heard that the victim, who could not communicate, suffered pain in her head, face, legs, hands and nose even though medical checks showed no visible injuries.
