0:01-Welcome to the show. Welcome to "The Tonight Show."
0:03It is great to meet you. -Thank you for having me.
0:05-I want to get to know you.
0:06I want to talk about your project.
0:08You just came back from London.
0:09You made your stage debut?
0:10-Yes. Yeah, at the National. -At the National.
0:13And you spoke in a British accent?
0:15-I did. -That's pressure.
0:17-Yeah. It's really scary to do their accent
0:20there, on their turf, yes. -Yeah.
0:22What was it like? Was it odd? Like, finishing --
0:25Did you stay in character?
0:27Were you British the whole time?
0:28-Well, it does help me to stay in an accent the whole time
0:32when I have to do one.
0:34Like I -- Like, during the whole rehearsal process,
0:38yeah, I was just sort of English through it.
0:41-Yeah. And what happened
0:43if American friends came to visit backstage?
0:45Would you talk to them like you're British?
0:47-If it was after the show -- -[ English accent ] Thank you.
0:49Thank you for coming, love.
0:51[ Laughter ]
0:52Appreciate it. -It was a little bit more...
0:54-Appreciate it. -...like a classical --
0:55-Who do you think you are? -That's very London.
0:58-Who do you think you -- -Who do you think you are?
1:00I can't do that actually.
1:02I can only do like [posh accent] a proper one.
1:03-Oh.
1:04-[ Normal voice ] I don't know why that happened.
1:06I swear I didn't do that in the play.
1:07-Talk to me. I came to meet you backstage.
1:10Hello, Monica. Great to meet you.
1:13And who do you -- Who do you think you are?
1:16[ Laughter ]
1:17[ Normal voice ] That's all I can say.
1:18That's all my character says. -It's really good. I like it.
1:20-[ English accent ] You're very proper.
1:21-Yeah, yeah. It was, um... -Proper accent.
1:24[ Normal voice ] Are you good with accents in general?
1:25-No, I mean, yes.
1:28But, like, I feel like I need a lot of prep.
1:31As you can see, I'm, like, way too nervous
1:33to do the English accent now because if I do it now
1:35and someone in the UK sees it,
1:36they'll be like, "No, no, no, she's terrible."
1:38-Oh, my God. -But I like --
1:40But there are, like, some that I think are still fun to do
1:42that I can't do properly at all. -Really?
1:46-Like -- -That's all I know how to do.
1:49Yeah. [ Laughter ]
1:50-What do you mean correct? -Yeah, what do you mean?
1:52Like which ones? Give me an example. What...
1:55-My friends and I have this running joke
1:58where we love to just like, um, like, it's --
2:02Sorry, guys. It's like -- [ Laughs ]
2:05We just do like a New York accent and you can, like,
2:08[Brooklyn accent] you can talk about anything.
2:10You can be going to the store and you could be,
2:12you know, buying -- There were no apples.
2:14I found that there was --
2:15-[ Bronx accent ] Where'd you find it?
2:16What are you talking about, apples?
2:18-All the apples were bruised, I don't know.
2:19-I don't want -- I got to eat apples.
2:21That's all I eat this whole weekend.
2:22-And it doesn't matter what you're saying.
2:24-It doesn't matter. -It becomes the most
2:25interesting, funny thing that you
2:26could ever have possibly said. [ Laughter ]
2:29-[ Normal voice ] See? That's fun. I love it.
2:31-We have a lot of fun doing it. -I love it.
2:32You have a dance background.
2:34Is that correct? -Yeah.
2:35-Yeah. -And so if you go to a party,
2:38are you the first one to hit the dance floor?
2:40-Obvi-- I feel like I've made it clear.
2:42I'm deeply shy. -Shy. Yes.
2:44-So no. -You're a shy dancer.
2:46-I actually really love dancing at parties
2:49and I've gotten -- Like, the older I've gotten,
2:51the more comfortable I've gotten to dance at parties.
2:53But, like, especially if people know I was a dancer,
2:55they'd be like, "Oh, step aside." I hate that.
2:57It's like, don't look at me. -No, don't.
2:59-No, no, no, everyone's got to be dancing
3:00and we all have to be chill.
3:02-What was your specialties in dance?
3:04What did you... -I did ballet.
3:05-Ooh. -Which is also not cool to do,
3:07like, at a wedding. -No.
3:08[ Laughter ] [ Up-tempo music plays ]
3:10Yeah. Look at me. Look at me, everyone.
3:13Yeah. -So good.
3:14-Really? So graceful. -So good.
3:15-I just recently saw the ballet recently,
3:18and I was just blown away of
3:20how unbelievable athletic everyone is.
3:21And it's gorgeous.
3:23It's like watching a moving painting.
3:24But yes. -Yeah, they make it look so easy.
3:26-Yeah. Flawless. Let's talk about your film.
3:29Your co-star Callum Turner was here last night
3:32and we were talking about the movie.
3:34It's called "One Night Only" and it's --
3:38he said it's like "The Purge,"
3:40but for sex is how he described it.
3:42[ Laughter ] -Yeah, yeah.
3:44-Yeah. Explain that to me.
3:45This is one night out of the year.
3:49-It's in a world where one night out of the year,
3:52single people, unmarried people, are allowed to have sex.
3:57-Yeah. So everyone's -- -That was not a bit.
3:59-No, that's the comedy. It's a romantic comedy.
4:01-That is the premise. -That's the plot.
4:02That's the premise. -Yeah.
4:04-Yes. And everyone on the Internet is going nuts.
4:06They're loving the premise of this.
4:07They go, "That's so funny." -Yeah.
4:09Loving it, hating it, but getting so excited by it.
4:12And that makes me really --
4:13That's why I wanted to do the movie
4:14because it's like you just sit there
4:16and you start to be like, okay, what else is true?
4:18And it just -- it's -- I don't know.
4:19-It's super funny, but everyone I see on the Internet
4:21are doing like pictures of "The Odyssey."
4:23They're like, dude, imagine them being on a 10-year trip
4:25and only to know that they missed the one night only.
4:28-The one night of the year. -The one night.
4:29-Yeah, they're in a rush to get back.
4:31-10 years. They're in a rush to get back.
4:32Yeah. Have you seen these ones that are online?
4:34-Yes, yes. They make me really happy.
4:36-I have one here.
4:38This one was a picture of "The Godfather" and says...
4:39-That's my favorite. -[ as Marlon Brando ] You come
4:41and see me on the one night a year
4:42single people are legally allowed to have sex?
4:46That's the one night you come to see me?
4:47-The one night. -The one night.
4:49[ Normal voice ] I want to show everyone a clip.
4:50Here's Monica Barbaro in "One Night Only."
4:52Take a look at this.
4:54-The universe is obviously telling us something.
4:56Maybe we shouldn't overthink this.
4:59-Overthink what?
5:02-You and me. [ Siren chirping ]
5:05-Oh, God. Wow. -What?
5:07-No! Dude, you just want to stick your thing somewhere.
5:11-What do you want to do with your thing
5:12or things or whatever?
5:14-Things?
5:15What exactly do you think I have going on down there?
5:17-I don't know yet.
5:19-I'm not changing who I am for this mandate.
5:22-Come on, there's no party.
5:24You just want us to have sex.
5:26-Of course, but not -- not sex
5:29that just leaves me feeling empty.
5:33-Well, how do you know that's what
5:34it's going to be like with me?
5:36-Years of anecdotal evidence.
5:39-Yeah. Monica Barbaro, everyone. [ Cheers and applause ]
5:42"One Night Only" is in theaters Friday.
5:44We'll be right back, everyone. Come on back.
