0:00You know, you never like to say too
0:01early you won. We won. We won the battle
0:03in the first hour it was over.
0:05>> Back in March, President Trump declared
0:07the war in Iran was over. But it wasn't.
0:10[music] Since then, 18 American service
0:12members have died. Iran has declared a
0:15return to full-scale war, and the
0:17fighting continues.
0:19So, if we won, why are Americans still
0:22fighting? Today Explain asked that
0:24question to Tom Nichols, who spent 25
0:27[music] years teaching national security
0:29at the U.S. Naval War College. Now, he's
0:33a staff writer at The Atlantic, [music]
0:35where he recently argued that Americans
0:37deserve a clearer explanation of this
0:40war.
0:40>> I think he's lying, misleading people,
0:42exaggerating, making misstatements, but
0:45in some cases, just flat-out telling
0:48lies. And when he says, for example,
0:50Iran is desperate to make a deal.
0:52>> And they want to make a deal so badly
0:53they called
0:55a little while ago. They want to make a
0:56deal so badly. They want to meet
0:58desperately to try and end it because
1:00they're getting decimated.
1:02>> He's back to that one. I was trying to
1:03count up how many times he said things
1:06like the war is over. And months into
1:09the war, he had said that something like
1:1030 times already. When you've said the
1:12war is over 30 times, well, you're
1:15launching weapons and missiles are
1:17falling on your troops. That's That's
1:20just a lie.
1:21>> We've won this with This war has been
1:23won. So, I think we won.
1:24>> The Iranians almost seem to launch an
1:27attack every time Trump says they're
1:29desperate for a deal just to underscore
1:31the point that no, they're not desperate
1:33for a deal. And the one deal we had
1:36that the president touted as this great
1:39deal,
1:41this MOU, was actually a terrible deal,
1:43was inherently unstable, and it was the
1:45foundation of a cease-fire where nobody
1:48ceased firing. It was a fake cease-fire.
1:51For now, what the American people need
1:52to hear is
1:53this is what we want, this is the price
1:56we're willing to pay to it. This is what
1:57we want from the Iranians, and that's
2:00what would [music] bring this to a
2:01close.
