Green Party Chooses New Leader
Mike Morrice is running for the Green Party leadership.
Morrice announced his run on Wednesday in Kitchener. He was at TheMuseum.
Morrice wants to lead the party to help ordinary people and stop the rich from getting richer.
Morrice was an MP but lost his seat in the last election. Kelly DeRidder won by 358 votes.
Morrice is now the deputy leader of the federal Greens and will run in the next election.
Morrice says growing the party is like growing a green team in Ottawa.
He wants to work with other groups to stop the rich from keeping all the money.
The Green Party started looking for a new leader on June 11.
Elizabeth May will step down as leader but will stay until November.
Elizabeth May will leave her job as leader soon.
May is the only Green MP now. She was first elected leader in 2006 and stepped down in 2019.
People who wanted to be leader had to apply by July 17. Morrice is running against Nira Dookeran.
Nira Dookeran has been a candidate before and has volunteered for the party for over 10 years.
Dookeran says this is an important time for the party.
The party needs to change and make decisions together, says Dookeran.
Morrice agrees with Dookeran that the party needs to change.
Morrice and Dookeran share the same values and want what's best for the party.
Morrice is happy Dookeran is running.
People will vote for the new leader from November 2 to 13. The winner will be announced on November 14.
