Why a Husband‑Wife Duo Holds Almost Three‑Quarters of Vietnam’s Billionaire Wealth

According to Forbes’ real‑time billionaire list, the country’s eight billionaires together own $54.5 billion. Pham Nhat Vuong’s fortune stands at $36.5 billion, while his wife, Pham Thu Huong, holds $4.1 billion. Combined, they account for nearly 75 % of the total billionaire wealth in Vietnam.

Vuong, 58, chairs Vingroup and is ranked 60th in the world, making him the richest person in Southeast Asia. His net worth is $16.6 billion higher than that of Indonesia’s Low Tuck Kwong, the region’s second‑richest billionaire. On August 27, Vuong added about $2.3 billion to his assets, placing him among the day’s biggest gainers alongside Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Huong, Vingroup’s vice‑chairwoman, recently moved to second place among Vietnamese billionaires, overtaking Vietjet founder Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, who is worth $4 billion.

The concentration of wealth in a single family means that the remaining six billionaires share only about $13.9 billion, or roughly a quarter of the nation’s billionaire pool. This stark imbalance highlights how a small group can dominate a country’s economic elite.

Forbes calculates individual fortunes primarily from the number and market value of publicly traded shares, but also includes private‑company stakes, real estate, artwork and other assets.
