Why Ottawa is launching a $1 trillion investment summit amid trade tensions

On September 14‑15, Prime Minister Mark Carney will host an investment summit in Toronto. The event aims to attract about $1 trillion of foreign capital for 167 projects that cover energy, mining, infrastructure, digital technology and other sectors.

The government released a 66‑page prospectus that groups the projects into eight investment areas. Among the most expensive pitches are a $57 billion expansion of the Port of Churchill, a $44 billion offshore wind farm in Nova Scotia, a $35 billion West Coast oil pipeline, and a $28.5 billion floating LNG terminal on British Columbia’s coast.

Invitations have been sent to the world’s largest investment firms and sovereign‑wealth funds. CBC News notes that the outreach comes amid trade upheaval and geopolitical uncertainty, prompting Ottawa to seek large‑scale funding from abroad.

At the same time, the U.S.–Canada trade war is escalating. The Canadian government says this creates pressure to deepen economic ties beyond the United States, making a global investment push more urgent.

By gathering potential investors in one place, Ottawa hopes the summit will provide the financing needed for the massive projects listed in the prospectus and broaden Canada’s economic partnerships at a time when its traditional market is under strain.
